NAWA is seeking contributions towards establishing a 10-bed hospital at the
Paniya Colony, with facilities for in-patients and an outpatient section. At
present the dispensary at the Paniya Colony is only open during the daytime.
Patients requiring hospitalization need to be transported to either Sultans
Battery or Calicut, in Kerala State, or to the Kolikarai Hospital of NAWA, which
is over 150 km from the Paniya Colony, up the Nilgiri Hills. As mentioned in
this book, very sick patients cannot safely be subjected to such arduous
journeys. NAWA is hopeful that once it starts a basic hospital at the
Paniya Colony to serve that region, government grants can be obtained to assist
with running costs, such as staff salaries, medicines and special diets.
