With this movie, Cate Blanchett became my current favourite female actress, and her performance in this movie may have blinded me to some aspects that I realized only after reading a few reviews. Judy and I pondered what other females could have played the role. Diane Lane, Madeleine Stowe perhaps, but Blanchette was perfect for it. Tommy Lee Jones is always powerful when on screen but he is outdone in this one. But this brings us to some of the things that the critics and users point out. Parts of the plot are pretty unbelievable. My favorite reviewer Roger Ebert did not like this movie. But we liked it. It kept us interested throughout and
we identified with a mother's scorn, and it is fiction after all. So despite some weaknesses in the plot, Ron Howard has directed a good western movie, and we would recommend it.
