This is a great action movie with some love thrown in and it all plays pretty well for me. The movie is getting mixed reviews from the critics, and I can see why. But who really cares. This is a movie of a Greek tragedy but it's not meant to be the Iliad. Roger Ebert doesn't like it - "Troy is based on the epic poem The Iliad by Homer, according to the credits. Homer's estate should sue." But for most of us it's just a story about some heroes and villains. The love scenes are sincere and tastefully done. See it on the big screen for effect.
