I'm always intrigued when movies receive such different ratings on different movie sites. Yahoo, as shown below, shows a Critics rating of B-, not bad. On Rotten Tomatoes the movie only shows 31% positive. Roger Ebert says "I object to the movie not on sociological grounds but because I suspect a real geisha house floated on currents deeper and more subtle than the broad melodrama on display here." We were disappointed also. Somehow it was a long documentary about a Geisha girl, but in the end we didn't know what we were supposed to get out of the film or the story. On the plus side, Zhang Ziyi is very good in this movie. Ken Watanabe, after a great outing in The Last Samurai, is not so great in this movie. Enough said. Leave this one to rental if you are really interested.
