Dec 2, 2007 - A tribute to two great dogs
Patches  March 1993 - Nov 2007
We really never had Patches as a puppy as she came to us at 7 months old.  She was crazy right from the start.  If we weren't careful, and she got a chance to get out, she was gone.  And was fast - real fast.  But she was an adorable dog and a great companion.  She would be in your way all the time just to be close. Never passed up a chance to be on the furniture, with or without you.  She was more Jamie's dog as Deanna and Mike were already out of the house by then, but everyone loved her when they were here.  She was warm and fuzzy, often referred to as "Peaches".  She even survived being run over by a truck.  We often joked she may have received brain damage because of the crazy way she acted, but we knew it was just our loveable Patches.
Nala - November 1995 - Nov 2007
We are thankful to Deanna and Brian for bringing Nala into our lives.  She was actually their dog, but through a series of events became ours in the fall of 1996, and so started an 11 year bond between her and Patches.  Nala was nothing like Patches.  She was pure German Shepard.  Always prim and proper. She would play but not get goofy.  She started life with Kyra and baby Rio, and so throughout her life she loved little children.  If she heard a baby cry on TV, she was immediately up and looking.  Nala loved to chase antelope but never caught them.  She got kicked by a cow once for getting too close.  Two sets of neighbours shared these two dogs as pets through the fence.  She was one of the most gentle dogs we ever knew.
More memories of Nala and Patches here
                      The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

There was a custom that when prominent families went to war they brought back a tree sample and planted it on the estate.  The pine tree in the background is reputed to have been grown from a cutting taken from a tree at the Battle of Culloden in 1745.  That makes it um... over 260 years old.   More here
