My favourite type of movie has always been about personal triumph over great odds, especially when they are based on an actual event. This movie is that and so much more, and to really enjoy it you should like baseball, but it's not necessary. In addition to the personal triumph, this movie is about love, family support, sacrifice, and community. In fact if we didn't know that it was based on a true story, it would seem just too good to be true. By the directors own admission the story has been altered somewhat, but is thematically correct. We are touched by it because it is all that is good about humanity and how persistence and support can see us achieve our dreams. The movie is set mostly in west Texas and I first saw it in Katy [Houston], Texas on the big screen. If you have already seen it, I would again suggest renting the DVD for the special features, where the real Jimmy Morris tells the story. Oh and for the ladies, there's a line in the movie that brought a round of cheers and hoots in that Texas theatre. Listen for it. Not hard to find and I suspect for the ladies, they would substitute whatever place fits for them.

Storyline from Yahoo: THE ROOKIE tells the extraordinary real-life story of Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid), who had to drop out of minor league baseball because of an injury to his pitching arm. Twelve years later, inspired by the young men on the championship-winning high school team he coaches, Morris is convinced to fulfill his own dream and try out for a professional team. With perseverance and confidence, he finally steps up to the plate, and after his pitching is clocked in the high nineties, he is signed to a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and soon after, moving onto his lifelong dream - the major leagues.
