Baseball has been part of Judy's and my life for as long as I can remember. I played in a field by our house in Bowness with friends, sometimes as few as three, and as many as 6 - 7. My organized ball playing at an early age of about 12, as I recall, lasted 3 games. I got struck out every time at bat and my fielding wasn't spectacular. That ended my organized ball playing career for many years.
Judy on the other hand started playing organized fast ball at the age of 13, and went on to play on many teams, through the next 39 years. Boxes of trophies, not yet unpacked from the last move, are a testament to her accomplishments as a fast ball pitcher, and all around player. Judy says to become a pitcher it really helps to have a readily available catcher, and she had her sister Karen. That combination played in Calgary before we were married and after, taking breaks only to have her children. Unfortunately the "sisters" combination broke up when we moved to Fox Creek where Judy joined the Highway 43 ladies fast ball league. Between league games, we spent many weekends going to tournaments around central and northern Alberta. It was a real family affair.
It was in Fox Creek that my baseball career picked up again, as I pitched fastball in a commercial league for a few years, but the league kind of fizzled and so mostly I supported Judy in her league and tournament play.
When we moved to Medicine Hat, Judy became involved in the Medicine Hat Ladies Fastball League, and I had the honour to coach her team for many years. It was also a dream of Judy to play in the same league as her daughter, and this she got to do when Deanna came into the league at the young age of 14. Deanna was also a pitcher and Judy started catching for her daughter, but also continued to pitch. That combination actually won the city championship, and had we not gone on holidays, the story of the mother - daughter combination might have wound up in Sports Illustrated.
After the Medicine Hat League folded, Judy [and Deanna] played for a few years in the Redcliff Ladies Fastball League, until Judy decided it was time to retire. Well almost.
In 1997 Judy and I started playing in the church coed league, and that was very special to be able to play together after all these years. Judy continues to play in that league, but now mostly at second base.
With Judy's encouragement, in 2002 I started playing with the Medicine Hat Senior Men's League. This is my third year playing for the Moose in the Medicine Hat Senior Men's Slowpitch League. I play the outfield, and second base. This was my first opportunity to play in uniform and is turning out to be great fun and I love playing in that league. I hit my first home run, a grand slam, in the first playoff game of the first season.
And the story is not over yet!!
